These Hive Sets are ready to set on your hive stand and release the bees as soon as you get them to your designated apiary location. There is no need for any waiting period. Let them fly so they can orient and go find water and other resources in their new zip code.
Our complete Deluxe Honey Bee Hive Sets come complete with mated queens & a 5 frame Nuc of Bees installed into a 10 Frame Langstroth Style hive body with 3 new frames and a 1.5 gallon feeder. The bees are ready to release for flight upon arrival at their new location. During the growing season, they will soon need more growing room to prevent swarming.
Addition boxes can be ordered with any set to save a trip later for more boxes as the bees grow - (think of how fast kids can grow out of shoe sizes).
Quick Recap - These hives are made with white pine and every box is nailed or stapled and glued for added strength and stability. The sets come complete with a 1.5 Gallon Frame Pro Feeder, assembled and coated Hive Body, assembled Wood Frames, 8 total per box - 5 with comb and bees (the nuc) and 3 blank Frames with Waxed Rite-Cell® Foundation, one of the blanks may be a green drone frame. You will also receive an assembled Telescoping Top Cover with Inner Cover, a Screened Bottom Board with Entrance Reducer.
Hive stands are not included, but easy to create with a few concrete blocks. Visit the Bee Pick Up Day FAQs page for hive stand recommendations and more.
You have choices of bee genetics as well as wood coatings for protecting the hive from the elements. We offer two lines of bees, the traditional Italian lines (best for beginners) as well as our own Texan bees being available for pick up starting April 11th.
Click or Tap to see to change the coating type to the classic white painted boxes or leave for the hot wax dipped. (dipped for long term, low maintenance option for only a few dollars more.)

Genetic option availability is dependent in part on the time of the year and what we have access to in terms of availability from our favorite out-of-state Italian queen bee suppliers. We purchase the Italian queens from reputable breeders, normally from northern California, but also from Hawaii when we want them earlier in the season than the weather in Cali allows for proper mating.
For our Texan lines, we have mating yards surrounded by hundreds of gentle drone mother donor hives to flood the DCAs (Drone Congregation Areas) with our preferred genetics. Using this practice is how we minimize the number of Africanized drones in the areas where our Texan queens go on mating flights and keep our lines from being overly aggressive.
However, this is mainly productive during the spring here in Texas when the colonies are raising a lot of drones. The other factor is proper weather for the queen to take her mating flights to the DCAs. Some years the window of opportunity for raising queens successfully stays open longer than other years.
Coating options offer beekeepers a choice of painted or wax dipped. Hot wax dipping is not new to the beekeeping industry, but until recently it was not readily available at affordable prices, until recently. The dipped equipment is a new line we are offering as a way to provide customers with woodware with a longer life expectancy. We have not ran any field trials, but the folks that have been using wax dipped hives boast they get an additional 20+ years longer than painted equipment.
Why Choose Wax Dipped?
The equipment is made in the USA, wax dipped in a proprietary, bee friendly wax blend specifically formulated to enhance longevity of your woodenware. Woodenware is dipped at a high temperature, sterilizing the box, boiling moisture out and allowing the wax to impregnate the wood, resulting in up to 25 years of use in the field.
Not only does wax dipping offer excellent performance benefits, it provides a beautiful finish on the hive that will look great in your apiary!
Why Chose White Paint?
As with the Wax Dipped, the equipment is made in the USA and painted in our yards by one of our staff. We use the same type and quality the pros use for painting houses, so it's meant to last several years before repainting. Of courses, like any house, a maintenance coat every few years improves the life of the wood the paint is protecting. With painted boxes, you have the option of painting what ever color suits your tastes and needs. Some folks like to have each hive a different color and/or designs painted on them.
The choice is yours to make and all the options are fine, or we would not offer them. We use a variety of all of the above in our own operation and the bees use them all the same. Note: The lighter paint colors like White, Silver, Lt. Beige and most pastel colors reflect heat and stay cooler in the summer than darker colors.
We are experimenting with the wax dipped equipment to test this option in our area to see if we get the same results as the guys in other parts of the country report.

This image shows the sizes of the top, hive body, and bottom board. This should help for making hive stands and/or making arrangements for loading into the space available in a vehicle.
Basically each unit will have a footprint of just under 19" x 24" (call it 2 foot by 2 foot for round figures) and can be stacked several layers high transporting.
Ready for Transport
The hives are bound together with ratchet straps to hold the hive parts together for transport. The entrances are plugged and secured with the bees inside the night before pick up.
The screened bottom board comes with an insert, called a "debris board", that slides into the bottom for winter or removed when needed for more ventilation... i.e. while transporting hives in warm weather.
The debris board will be held to the hive with the ratchet strap above the top cover for transport and should be stored indoors until fall when the night time temperatures fall into the 50s regularly, then inserted into the groove in the bottom board from the back side. This prevents cold air from blowing into the hive and allows the bees to keep the cluster warmer with less effort.
We will gladly demonstrate this process when you pick up your hives.

We want you to be happy and successful in your beekeeping journey, so we do our best to provide the best bees, supplies and information that we can. However, since we can not bee with everyone for every step of process, we can offer guidance and classes to help you establish a good foundation that you can build upon going forward.
We double check all Hives and Nucs prior to labeling them "ready for pick up". We have an experienced crew and rarely have issues, but we are human and prone to mistakes and of course bees are live animals and prone to change from one day to the next. Therefore we have the following policy and will replace or exchange a colony if we are notified of an issue right away. Please note that waiting more than a week to report an issue, is not considered right away.
